I received a phonecall one cold wet evening from a client to say a mare was about to arrive on her yard who was in a terrible condition, the Vet was going to be in attendance but I was also asked if I could go to the yard. My client had found this little mare a few days earlier in a poor condition and managed to persuade the owner to let the horse be re-homed.
When the lorry arrived both the Vet and I were waiting, the ramp was lowered and there stood this little mare looking like a hat rack, dripping with sweat, weeping eyes and her muzzle covered in mucus from her nostrils. She was led to a stable where the Vet could examine her, bloods were taken, antibiotics given along with vitamin injections. Solar was given a body condition score of between 1 and 2 and her new carer advised to keep her in isolation until the blood tests were back and we knew what we were dealing with.
Whilst the Vet chatted to Solars new carer I was drawn into her stable where she stood nibbling a haynet, I offered her Reiki and immediately she left her hay and accepted the therapy, going into a deeply relaxed state. I chatted with her telling her she was safe and all would be OK. After about 30 minutes she stretched and returned to her hay. Those present on the yard, some of whom were sceptics, were astonished how a very hungary horse would leave food for an energy healing session!
I returned to Solar daily for about a week offering her Reiki and herbs, day by day she improved and within a week she looked much better. The Vet returned after one week and was also amazed at how she had picked up so quickly. The blood tests had shown an old viral infection which had not been treated and resulted in secondary infections, this being the case Solar had to stay in isolation for around a month, more to protect her from any further infections than to protect the other horses. Her immune system was so weak another infection could have easily been final for her.
Solars infection cleared up very quickly and she was off the medication within 7 days, although she still stayed in isolation for a while. I saw her regularly for many weeks, on every visit she looked stronger and healthier. After just a few months she had regained the weight and was ready to start some gentle work - she is now working well and living in her new herd happily and a picture of health.
Solar to me showed how if an animal is so unhappy this can manifest outwards, in her case weight loss and infections - her previous owners fed her and did care for her but Solar and her owner just did not get on - there was no bond. Once Solar was in a home where she felt loved - which she is - she could begin to help herself and of course she then had the will to carry on.
